HEAD OF REFRIGERATION

As Head of Refrigeration, I’m responsible for ensuring my team delivers exceptional service that realises customer expectations. My role includes operational oversight, working with our support teams to ensure compliance with legislative changes, and providing training to upskill our engineers. A key focus for me is continuously improving our operating model to maximise efficiency.

Coordinating resources is always a challenge, especially given the size and complexities of our customers estates. The introduction of our in-house developed, proprietary scheduling system has been a game-changer.  It dynamically streamlines work orders, ensuring the right engineer with the right expertise is assigned to each job. the system is relatively new, but the benefits are already being realised – and me and my team are providing regular feedback to enhance it further, so we expect even more efficiencies as the tool evolves.

Ongoing training is vital in refrigeration. Arcus is a member of the British Refrigeration Association, which keeps us aligned with the latest industry practices. We also work closely with customers and contractors to stay ahead of new technologies. For example, we’ve introduced training on a Refrigeration Integrated Heating & Cooling System (RIHCS) at our National Training Centre in Stevenage. We also have a whole section dedicated to refrigeration controls, with a variety of suppliers kit hosted at the centre. This ensures our engineers are fully proficient in using innovative equipment and can train in a true to life environment – increasing our ability to fix first time on site.

Technology underpins everything we do. With tools like Helix (our remote monitoring system), we can perform remote diagnostics, ensuring our teams focus their time and effort where it matters most. This means fewer unnecessary van rolls and faster resolutions. The predictive capabilities of Helix also help us prevent potential breakdowns, ensuring we stay one step ahead.

Every customer has unique needs, and tailoring our approach is crucial. By understanding their goals and KPIs, we can focus our efforts where they’ll have the greatest impact. Whether it’s reducing call-outs, ensuring first-time fixes, coping with peak demands including extreme weather events, or meeting the specific requirements of bespoke equipment, we adapt our services to deliver value.

Sustainability is also a big focus for us. By analysing data, we can identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, reduce call-outs, and minimise refrigerant usage. Ensuring refrigeration systems operate at optimal performance not only saves costs for our customers but also supports their environmental goals.
